Today We Celebrate Armen Hyusnunts' Birthday
Armen Hyusnunts is a saxophonist, flutist, composer, arranger, bandleader of the Armenian State Jazz Band, Honoured Artist of Republic of Armenia.
Armen completed his studies at the Sayat-Nova Musical School, piano department, and in 1984 entered the saxophone department at the Komitas State Conservatory, Yerevan (1991-1993 Komitas State Conservatory, post-graduate department, instrumental performance- saxophone).
Between 1985- 1987, while serving in the army, Huysnunts played in the Moscow Model Military Orchestra of the Guard of Honor. In 1987 he began teaching saxophone in music schools in Yerevan. A year later he joined the Artashes Kartalyan Jazz Quartet, and from 1988 to 1989 he played in the Armenian State Jazz Band, led by Konstantin Orbelyan.
From 1989 to 1993 he was a member of the Yerevan State Chamber Theatre and Artashes Kartalyan Quartet. In 1990 Hyusnunts was invited to perform with the State TV and Radio Jazz Symphonic Orchestra of Armenia and became the leading saxophone player for two years.
Armen, togehter with Khachik Sahakyan, created the ethnic jazz quintet Time Report. Some of his original compositions as well as instrumental arrangements of Armenian songs were performed and recorded in the band's albums. It’s hard to get a full picture of Time Report without Armen Hyusnunts’ unique style.
From 1992 to 2004 he was the principal saxophonist at the Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1997 to 2005 he was a member of Armenian State jazz band, the musical director and the soloist.
In 1998 Arto Tuncboyaciyan formed the Armenian Navy Band and asked Huysnunts to play in it. From 1999 to 2005 he worked at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas as a tutor of saxophone. In 2000 he founded the ArtaSax Sax Quartet.
Huysnunts taught at Yerevan State College of Pop and Jazz Art for six years. Since 2008 Armen has been workin at a music school in Yerevan as saxophone tutuor. Armen Hyusnunts has been working as the music director of the Armenian State Jazz Band and since November 2010 he has been the artistic director and the conductor of the band.
Touring around the world, arranging recordings of many CDs, Armen has become a prominent musician of the Armenian Navy Band. Armen Hyusnunts has participated in numerous international festivals, toured with different groups in the USA, Europe, Japan, Middle East, played with many famous artists such as Chick Corea, Billy Cobham, Joe Zawinul and many others.
In 2011 Armen Hyusnunts was awarded the title of the Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia. In 2011 he became a member of Penman jazz band.
